The series dramatizes his rise from a boy who witnessed the execution of his father, Prince Sado, to a benevolent king, and his love for royal concubine Sung Song-yeon. The cast is led by Lee Seo Jin as Lee San (King Jeongjo) and Han Ji Min as Sung Song-yeon, with Park Eun Hye and Lee Jong Soo.
